Abstract
Insulin and gut hormone discovery and development provide good examples of the healing power of chemistry, which is the October 2023 ACS theme for its National Chemistry Week. This talk highlights points along the timeline of drug development of insulin and incretin peptides that broadened options for people with diabetes, obesity and cardiometabolic disorders, revolutionizing the possibility for improved quality of life.
Biography
Barbara Ameer is a drug development and pharmacology consultant in Princeton Jct, NJ and is dual board certified in pharmacotherapy and clinical pharmacology. Since 2005 she has been an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick NJ. Prior to that appointment, she was a Research Associate Professor at Rutgers in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. She earned her undergraduate and professional doctorate degrees in pharmacy at the University of Connecticut and Virginia Commonwealth University, respectively, and an MBA with a concentration in management and business strategy at Rutgers.
Her professional credentials include dual board certification in clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy. She serves on editorial boards and has published on clinical therapeutics and drug development. An honorary regent and fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, Dr. Ameer was the recipient of its distinguished service and excellence in achievement awards. Notable contributions to its governance were holding elected offices as board member and treasurer for 3 terms, and founding/chairing an international development committee. An ACS member for 23 years, Barbara chairs the Princeton and Trenton sections’ Chemagination competition, advises as alternate councilor, and previously served as secretary and 2015 chair of the Section.
Visitor parking information
Visitors coming to the University on weekdays from 7 AM to 4 PM are welcome to park in Stadium Drive Garage. Frequent TigerTransit service is available from the garage to stops on Washington Road, Nassau Street, and University Place. Click for more information on TigerTransit routes and schedules. Visitors parking in the garage are asked to register for a daily visitor permit. Registration can be done online in advance or at the garage during arrival.
After 4 pm and on weekends
After 4 PM on weekdays and all day on the weekend parking registration is not required. University visitors may park in any numbered and non-restricted parking lots, including the Theater Drive Garage, Prospect Ave Garage, and Stadium Drive Garage.
